The inaugural copper stewardship workshop was organised by the International Copper Association (ICA) in New York during May 2005.

The purpose of this workshop was to bring together ICA members, customers and other interested parties to help ICA define stewardship and set out appropriate activities for ICA’s Environment Program in 2006 and beyond.

The ICA Stewardship Principles outlined in their 2009 Annual Report states:

“We strive to protect human health and minimize impact to the environment.
We develop and disseminate knowledge about copper and copper products to support beneficial uses.
Our stewardship program incorporates the concepts of resource, process and product stewardship.
Risk assessment, life cycle assessment and best management practice are central to our activities in copper stewardship and sustainable development.
We develop sound scientific information for sustainable copper markets, regulatory decision-making and market protection and promotion.
We are transparent with the information we develop. Full disclosure of health and environmental information is key to effective multi-stakeholder engagement and market access.
Material conservation contributes to sustainable resource management. We strive to maximize recycling of copper. “
